The main objective of this study was to determine the
pattern of neonatal diseases and their causes.
Methodology: A retrospective study was conducted in May-June 2023
for the clinical audit of neonatal diseases in past 5 months admitted in
Government Allama Iqbal Memorial Tertiary Care Hospital, Sialkot.
Results: Total 250 neonates were admitted in the last 5 months in the
neonatal unit of Government Allama Iqbal Memorial Teaching Hospital,
Sialkot. Out of 250 neonates 65% were males and 35% were females.
Total 164 out of 250 (65.6%) of the neonates were admitted during the
first week of their life. Asphyxia, sepsis, RDS and JNN were the four most
common causes of neonatal admissions contributing 27.6%, 30.8%,
29.6%, 12% respectively.
Conclusion: Prematurity, sepsis and birth asphyxia were the main
causes of admission and of mortality, out of which 37% neonates were
delivered in the Gynae and Obs. unit of the same hospital. Most of the
causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality were preventable, like
prematurity, birth asphyxia and sepsis
